Heartbreak at 45 MPH – the Harsh Reality of Greyhound Racing
A deep, scratchy voice announces their presence over the loudspeaker. "Heeeere comes Hollywood!" the gates open, and eight muzzled greyhounds spring forth in a speedy, thundering mass of bobbing fur, each wearing a brightly colored, numbered jersey. Tiny puffs of dirt follow their sinewy legs. This is the seventh race of the night at Mardi Gras Racetrack and Gaming Center in Hallandale Beach, the highest-paying dog track in Florida. It's August 19, 2006. the race begins at 9:23 p.m. At 9:24, the audience will witness something horrid.
The dogs set off sprinting around an oval-shaped dirt track, chasing a loud, buzzing mechanical lure. the lure is attached to a metal arm speeding along the inside edge of the track. Like bulls who see the flick of a matador's cape, the dogs lunge madly after the lure. Greyhounds can hit 45 miles per hour in just two steps, but the lure always stays just out of their reach.
A sleek, shiny, black 2-year-old wearing a red jersey with a white "5" on it — his name is BB's Story Book, but in racing parlance, he is simply "the five" — is quick out of the box. a few strides into the race, however, the six dog nudges Story Book inside. Then the eight bumps him again. This time, Story Book struggles back, running neck and neck with the eight. as the dogs lean left into a turn, Story Book's hind legs slip. There's a cloud of dust. Story Book is sucked under the eight. the eight stumbles but recovers, hurrying off to catch the pack. Story Book, however, rolls out of the picture.
The announcer says matter-of-factly, "Going down, that was the five."
As the rest of the dogs continue around the track, Story Book rolls to a stop deep in the first turn. He stands back up, dizzy and weak. He can still hear the mechanical lure buzzing around the track. Then, with that amazing greyhound eyesight, he spots it.
The three dog is in the lead, just entering the final turn, when the announcer realizes what's about to happen. "Get the five!" he commands. Then again, with an added degree of disgust: "Get the five!"
Still mixed up from his fall, Story Book sees the lure making its way back around the track. Now it's on the straightaway coming toward him. He takes off at full speed — in the wrong direction.
This is a no-win situation. if the lure operator stops the arm, the seven dogs following behind it will collide in a terrifying pile of snapped bones and broken necks; if he doesn't, it will drive right through the fragile body of the dazed, 73-pound black dog.
The lure doesn't stop.
The bar hits Story Book at the collarbone, shattering his chest and bending each leg in a new, unnatural direction. Knocked end over end, the dog lands on his back. He lies there convulsing in front of the grandstand. the other dogs barely dodge Story Book's flailing body. the announcer lets out an abhorred grunt.
As I watch video of the tragic race, I notice that Story Book has a white belly and white feet, just like my newly adopted greyhound — who raced on the very same track just a few months after this incident. Jailamony (her racing name) is 4 years old. she is sweet and revels in human affection. but there are constant reminders of her racing life: missing teeth, patches of missing fur (called "kennel butt"), a tattoos in her ear, and a noticeable limp.
The longer Jailamony lives with me, the more questions I have: What were her racing days like? What happened to the other dogs from her litter? And what really happens to greyhounds that aren't adopted when they're done racing?
To answer my questions, I visited my dog's old track. I spoke with industry veterans and racing opponents. And I ventured where reporters rarely tread — inside the heavily secured compound known as the Florida Kennels.
Florida, with the majority of breeding farms and nearly half the tracks in the country, is the epicenter of dog racing. Although a well-organized antiracing lobby now has its sights set on the Sunshine State, it's hard to tell if legislative efforts are hastening or hindering the end of this moribund industry.
When I answer the front door, I'm greeted by 60 pounds of twitchy curiosity waiting to come inside. Jailamony has a sleek, shiny, black coat with a white chest, what look like little white socks, and a matching white tip at the end of her wagging tail. She's all muscle, ribs, and light-stepping legs, like a pony. she wiggles through the door, eager to sniff every square foot of my small, two-story apartment.
When my girlfriend and I visited the Friends of Greyhounds (friendsofgreyhounds.org) adoption kennel in Hialeah, we saw Jailamony pressing her face against the inside of her cage. Workers told us black dogs don't get adopted as often because some people think they might be evil. Jailamony gave us big take-me-home eyes, and when kennel staff tried to put her back in her crate, she hid behind my girlfriend's legs.

mocoNews – Analysts Rethink Wisdom Of A Motorola Spinoff
But according to the nytimes.com, analysts are beginning to rethink the wisdom behind a spin-off. Argus Research Analyst Jim Kelleher told the newspaper, "If Motorola (NYSE: MOT) handset stands all alone in the sun, it's not going to be well structured to survive." a spin-off, of course, doesn't solve the unit's most immediate and obvious issue: the lack of enticing new products. In its earnings call last week, Jha acknowledged as much, noting that one of the factors governing the timing of the separation was the unit's actual progress, which he declared to be on track. moreover, chopping off the cellphone unit may take away some of the synergies the company enjoys as a whole through its shared technology base. said Kelleher, "I've long maintained that if you spin off the handset business, you risk orphaning the enterprise business because there are a lot of hand-held assets in that business. if you sever that relationship, there's a danger you lose that shared technology base."

Electric Mountain Bike Gets the Equivalent of 2,287 MPG
The Optibike OB1 electric bike gets an equivalent of 2,287 MPG.* Could bikes like these be the future of transportation?
Ever wonder what happens when you cross the finest mountain bike components money can buy, an 850w brushless DC motor and a 20ah lithium-ion battery with motocross styling and sensibilities? You get the Optibike OB1, an electric bike that can get up to 45 miles on a nine-cent charge, and what is arguably the finest electric bicycle in the world.
In fact, the Optibike OB1 even found a spot in the California Academy of Sciences museum, touted as "the future of transportation." There are only 24 OB1's made per year. When one of them is bought, the owner becomes part of an elite club of enthusiastic riders. And for four fun-filled days in August, I was lucky enough to be a member of that club — or at least able to pretend like I was after being provided one for a short term test drive.

The Story
Boulder, Colorado-based Optibike has been producing high performance electric bikes since 2005 and is fast carving out a name for itself in an increasingly crowded electric bikes market sector. But the Optibike, and the OB1 in particular, is not any old electric bike. Founder and principle designer Jim Turner first hatched the idea for an electric bike in 1997. Turner, who was a champion motocross rider, set out with more than a profit motive: Turner was motivated to address three converging problems: a growing obesity epidemic in the U.S., environmental pollution/CO2 emissions, and an energy crisis that caused gas prices to soar to record highs in 2008.
"What ties these three problems together — the health crisis, the environmental crisis and the fossil fuel crisis — is transportation," says Turner. But Turner recognized straight away that he would not be able to compete with Chinese electric bike makers for a lower price point and that he would just have to build a better bike.
"You can't compete with foreign imports on the lower price scale; you have to create a market niche," Turner told the Denver Post last year. And create a market niche he did.
The Bike
Optibike currently makes six models including a womens' bike, but they don't come cheap. Ranging from $5,995 for the Commuter USV, to $13,995 for the OB1, Optibikes are designed to be the antithesis of the throw-away culture, minus the batteries, which are warranted for an industry-leading 3 years/30,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Powering the OB1 are a 20ah lithium-ion battery and an 850w continuous brushless DC motor that Optibike says will give you about 45 miles of electric-only operation on a single 4.5-hour charge and 57 miles with a light to moderate amount of pedaling. The bike has two speeds, Fast and Eco. in Fast, a full charge will provide up to 50 minutes of riding; in Eco, a full charge will give 2.25 hours of unassisted propulsion. going on a longer trek? Add the optional secondary battery to double the Optibike's range.
Depending on how it's calculated, the Optibike can get an equivalent of anywhere between 1,355** and 2,287* miles per gallon. Yes, that's a wide range, but either way, it's tough to beat.
The secret behind the Optibike — and in my view, what makes it so special — is the Motorized Bottom Bracket® (MBB), which allows the user to pedal at the speed the bike is going and shift gears seamlessly. The MBB system gives the rider the freedom to pedal as much or as little as desired, allowing the rider to maximize the acceleration, top-speed, and range of the Optibike.
At your fingertips are the Optibike's 9-speed grip shifter, thumb throttle and front and rear hydraulic disk brakes. sure, you can sit back and the electric motor do all the work, but the Optibike is just begging to be pedaled. And pedal it I did.
On electric alone the OB1 will reach a top speed of 20 MPH on flat pavement. But why stop at 20 MPH when the bike is screaming for more? Once up to speed, I found the OB1 would maintain about 30 MPH with light pedaling and 33 or so with moderate pedaling.

Zito lasted only 1 1-3 innings a year ago in the A's opener, allowing seven runs and four hits with four walks against the new York Yankees in the shortest outing of his career.
Chris Carpenter will miss a turn in the Cardinals' rotation due to right elbow inflammation, though the team thinks its ace won't be out long. Carpenter complained of soreness Monday, the day after he struggled in the season opener against the Mets. An examination by the Cardinals' team physician on Tuesday did not include an MRI, and Carpenter said he thought his elbow already had improved.
Pittsburgh rallied for the second straight night to beat Houston 4-2 in 10 innings Tuesday. The Pirates started 0-6 last season and were 3-79 when they trailed after seven innings. They've already won two of those this year and matched their best start since 2003, when they opened 4-0.
Right-hander Brad Lincoln, the Pittsburgh Pirates' top draft pick last year and a former star at the University of Houston, had reconstructive elbow surgery Tuesday and will miss this season. six of the last seven pitchers the Pirates have drafted in the first round have needed major surgery: Lincoln, Bryan Bullington, John Van Benschoten, Sean Burnett, Bobby Bradley and Clint Johnston. Lincoln was 12-2 with a 1.69 ERA for Houston last season before the Pirates made him the no. 4 pick in the June draft.
''I don't think I'm going to a movie. I feel like I'm in an adult timeout and so I want it to feel the way it's supposed to feel and learn from the error of my ways.'' - Colorado manager Clint Hurdle after he served a one-game suspension Tuesday for a dustup March 13 in a spring training game against San Diego. Bench coach Jamie Quirk filled in and the Rockies beat Arizona 4-3 in 11 innings.

ATLANTA HAWKS ACQUIRE MIKE BIBBY FROM KINGS
ATLANTA HAWKS ACQUIRE MIKE BIBBY FROM KINGSAnthony Johnson, Tyronn Lue, Shelden Williams, Lorenzen Wright and draft pick sent to Sacramento to complete trade
ATLANTA, GA (Feb. 16, 2008) -- the Atlanta Hawks today acquired guard Mike Bibby from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Anthony Johnson, Tyronn Lue, Shelden Williams, Lorenzen Wright and a 2008 second round draft pick according to Hawks Executive Vice President/General Manager Billy Knight.
Were happy to be able to bring in a player of Mikes caliber, Knight said. Hes one of the premier point guards in the league and a proven winner going back to his college days at Arizona. his ability to score and distribute the basketball will add a new dimension to our ballclub.
Bibby, who missed the first 36 games of the season while recovering from surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb, averaged 13.5 points, 5.0 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals (.406 FG%, .393 3FG%, .742 FT%) in 15 games (12 starts) for the Kings this year.
Now in his 10th NBA season, Bibby boasts career averages of 16.7 ppg, 6.2 apg, 3.3 rpg and 1.3 spg (.441 FG%, .371 3FG%, .806 FT%) in 690 games with the Vancouver Grizzlies (1998-2001) and Kings (2001-08). a durable player throughout his career, he has played in at least 80 games during a season seven times.
A veteran of 51 playoff games, Bibby has averaged 17.9 ppg, 5.6 apg, 3.6 rpg and 1.5 spg (.418 FG%, .366 3FG%, .836 FT%) in postseason play. he led the Kings to the Western Conference Finals in 2001-02 averaging 20.3 ppg, 5.8 apg, 3.8 rpg and 1.4 spg (.444 FG%, .424 3FG%, .826 FT%) in 16 playoff games.
Mike is a veteran point guard who knows how to run a team, said Hawks coach Mike Woodson. Hell bring a steady hand to the position and provide our club with stability, creativity and leadership. Pairing him with Joe Johnson in the same backcourt will give us a number of options on the offensive side of things.
Johnson, in his third tour of duty with the Hawks, is averaging 6.4 ppg, 4.7 apg, 2.3 rpg and 1.0 spg (.423 FG%, .433 3FG%, .800 FT%) in 41 games (40 starting assignments) on the season. Lue has seen action in 33 contests (three starts), averaging 6.8 ppg, 1.8 apg and 1.2 rpg (.439 FG%, .435 3FG%, .857 FT%).
Williams, the Hawks first round draft pick (fifth overall) in the 2006 NBA Draft, has played in 35 games with averages of 2.9 ppg and 2.9 rebounds (.354 FG%, .673 FT%). Wright is in his second stint in Atlanta and has seen time in 12 contests (one start) this year, putting up 3.1 rpg and 0.9 ppg (.250 FG%, .500 FT%).
We will certainly miss the contributions of a.J., Tyronn, Shelden and Lorenzen, Woodson said. all four of those guys are professionals in every sense and we wish them the best.
Bibby was named to the 2003 Mens National Team by USA Basketball and helped lead the United States to a 10-0 record and a gold medal at the 2003 FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Puerto Rico. Originally drafted by Vancouver in the first round of the 1998 NBA Draft (second overall), he earned Schick First-Team All-Rookie honors in 1998-99 after averaging 13.2 ppg (.430 FG%, .203 3pt%, .751 FT%), 2.7 rpg, 6.5 apg (13th in NBA), 1.56 spg (25th) in starting all 50 games.
The 61 guard averaged a career-high 21.1 ppg (.432 FG%, .386 3pt%, .849 FT%), 5.4 apg, 2.9 rpg, 1.00 spg, and 38.5 mpg in starting all 82 games for Sacramento in 2005-06, ranking 19th in the NBA in scoring. he dished out a career-best 8.4 apg in 2000-01 while a member of the Grizzlies.
Bibby led the University of Arizona to the NCAA Championship as a freshman (1997-98), tallying 19 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals in the Championship Game victory over Kentucky. Named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year after posting season averages of 13.5 ppg (.445 FG%, .394 3pt%, .701 FT%), 3.2 rpg, and 5.2 apg, he also earned consensus First-Team All-America honors and was named Pac-10 Player of the Year as a sophomore, averaging 17.2 ppg (.464 FG%, .387 3pt%, .755 FT%) and 5.7 apg before opting for the NBA Draft.
Michael Bibby was born May 13, 1978 in Cherry Hill, NJ. he will wear number 10 with the Hawks. his father Henry Bibby played in the NBA for nine seasons and is now an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Basil Marceaux: The New “Internet Superstar”
Endorsed by hillbilly comedy duo Jackie Broyles and Dunlap on Red State Update, Basil said that he knew his views would get popular. he feels that he is liked by people for his daring speeches. he even went forward saying that
He is being widely criticized for such hilarious comments. But a search using the terms "Marceaux" and "governor" on Google, revealed 125,000 hits for this dark horse on Wednesday. this figure is way ahead than his competitor's- Ramsey, Wamp and Haslam's search results.Other Marceaux campaign plans includes planting grass or vegetables across the state , so that they can be sold for gas and also to raise the real three striped flag by removing the "gold finch flags".
With each day passing by, this Tennessee Republican governatorial hopeful Basil is gaining more and more publicity out of his speech video, which went viral over the net recently. Surely he is correctly given the title "new 2010 election boyfriend" by website named Wonkette. let us see, what "new" and "exciting" idea he comes up with next. till then have a look at his earlier speech video.
